Greer clinched the Region II-4A championship Friday night by walloping Union County in the annual Yellow Jackets Bowl, 63-20, at Dooley Field Friday night.
Greer is 8-1, losing only to Class 5A Byrnes, and is 3-0 in the region. It was the Yellow Jackets’ seventh straight win. Union County is 1-8 and 1-2.
Quarterback Trey Houston threw four touchdown passes – two in each half – and scored
Greer waltzed to the win with Houston throwing two touchdown passes and a 10-yard scoring run in another remarkable performance. Houston completed 23 of his 30 passes attempted for 231 yards.
Dre Williams ran for 160 yards and joined five other offensive players to score touchdowns. Quay White scored two touchdowns and Houston, Matthew Huff, Zech Evans and Nate Jefferson added one each.
So dominant was Greer’s defense that Union County was held to zero yards and first downs in the first half.
Union County may have thought it was still in the game, trailing Greer 21-0 at halftime. But Greer matched that total in the third and fourth quarters.
Two defensive players scored touchdowns for Greer. Matthew Mason cashed in on a 22-yard fumble recovery and return for his first career touchdown and Tyric Smith’s fumble return for 49 yards tacked on another six points.
Greer ends its regular season at Blue Ridge next Friday. Blue Ridge, 3-6, 1-2, was crushed by Eastside, 72-27, on Thursday night.
