The Greer girls basketball team won its first playoff game in five years Tuesday night.
Greer beat the Chapin Eagles, 70-52, at Greer in a first round Class AAA playoff game. The game was rescheduled from Monday night when freezing rain and hazardous roads delayed the start of the playoffs one day.
Greer (19-5) plays at Wren (18-4) in the second round Thursday at 7 p.m. Wren beat Broome 66-46 Tuesday night.
“All our girls put in a lot of work,” Head Coach Mazzie Drummond said. “When we share the ball and don’t care who gets the credit we can be a very good basketball team.”
Greer built a nine point first quarter lead (20-11) but saw it dwindle to three at halftime, 35-21. Tori Henderson scored eight first quarter points for Greer.
Damon Shiflet led Greer with 21 points, 16 in the first half as Greer. Megan Jones added 12 points followed by Brooke Wade with nine points and Marshee Murray with eight.
“When you have subs coming in and out with different combinations you can’t score as much,” Drummond said. “But you can keep the other team from scoring. You just have different strengths with different people on the floor.”
Greer virtually put the game away with a 23-point third quarter while holding Chapin to 11.
“We took the game quarter by quarter,” Shiflet said. “I’m glad we all got to score and we played hard as a team to the end, but there’s still more to come up.”
