Travelers Rest distanced itself from the Greer Lady Yellow Jackets with an explosive fourth quarter to win the non-region game at Greer High School tonight, 54-42.

Greer drops to 1-4 and Travelers Rest is 2-0. Greer hosts rival Riverside tonight at 6 in its third game in four days.

Greer was down by four points, 34-38, at the end of three quarters. Sarah Stevenson scored the quarter’s first points to pull Greer within two with 5:30 left and Caroline Neely tied the game at the 4:50 mark. Gray’s two free throws came two minutes later and her field goal with 1:09 left were the only other points the Lady Jackets could muster.

“We could have gotten separation at times and could have had them,” Greer Head Coach Carlton Greene said. “We had too many turnovers in the fourth quarter in transition and too many missed shots.”

Travelers Rest outscored the Lady Yellow Jackets 16-4 in the final period after Neely tied the score. Ashley Justice scored 7 of her 10 points during the run. Teammates Megan Marsh (5 points), Tukie Nicholson (4) and Sara Dorsett (2) shared the scoring spree.

“We didn’t attack the basket in the fourth quarter to get to the free throw line,” Greene said. TR went to the free throw line six times and made five in the final 2:49 when Greer fouled to try to close the gap.

“We’re gaining experience and they are learning different roles,” Greene said.
Stevenson scored the final five points in the first period including a three-point goal, to give Greer a 13-7 lead. She led Greer with 10 points and Alexis Miller and Sonyelle Gray scored nine points each. As Greene perused the game statistics he said, “I am most proud of the balanced scoring. They shared the ball well.”

Miller had an outstanding defensive night for Greer. “Alexis is a force in the middle,” Greene said. “She keeps people from getting shots in the middle and she gets timely rebounds. What’s good about Alex is she is not doing things she’s not capable of doing. She is staying within herself.”
