Greer’s Yellow Jackets begin their summer tour of 7-on-7 competitions hosting a home event Friday at Greer High School practice fields.

The nine-team field includes Greenville, Woodmont, Wade Hampton, J.L. Mann, T.L. Hanna, Southside, Southside Christian and Berea. Games begin at 9 a.m. with the last set at 2:05 p.m.

Greer will be coming into the competition with a new backfield lineup featuring skill players with speed and power. Emmanuel Kelly will see action at quarterback with Corbin Nesbitt (Byrnes transfer), Josh Gentry, D’Anta Fleming and Quez Nesbitt as receivers. Brook Chapman and Malik Johnson will be in the backfield.  Gentry will also take snaps at quarterback.

“I want to compete and for the players to have a good time,” Head Coach Will Young said. “We’ve got nothing else to do this summer.”

• Mazzie Drummond has been promoted to assistant head coach. Drummond will be responsible for more day-to-day activities and maintain his defensive backfield coaching routine. Travis Perry and Jay Abercrombie remain as defensive and offensive coordinators, respectively. “Mazzie helps the other side of football that I’m on,” Young said. Abercrombie coordinates Greer’s play in the 7-on-7 competitions.

• Greer’s weight room has been upgraded with racks bought from Furman University.  The steel racks were purchased for $200 each while they cost about $2,000 each new, Young said. Greer had plenty of weights. Furman’s strength coach left for Georgia Tech and the Paladins new coach was given a $150,000 weight room upgrade.

• Jarrett Szabo, a Florida transfer, has been moved to defensive end. Szabo played linebacker in Florida last year and played linebacker for the Jackets in the spring. “We moved him for the need at end,” Young said.

• Jonathan Adkins is moving to the Eastside school district and will enroll there to play football in the fall. “We wish him the best of luck,” Young said.
