Greer residents pay respects to Pfc. Barrett Austin on his return home

People in Greer waited on an overpass for the return of the body of 20-year-old soldier Pfc. Barrett L. Austin, of Easley.  Austin, who died of injuries suffered in Afghanistan, arrived at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport at 11:30 this morning.

Patriot Guard Riders and Pickens County Sheriff’s deputies escorted Austin along I-85 to Dillard Funerals and Cremations in Pickens.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley with burial at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens in Pickens.

The Austin family will receive friends at the church in Pickens on Tuesday 6-9 p.m. The funeral service is Wednesday at 4 p.m. and Pfc. Austin will receive full military honors at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Austin died April 21 in Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries suffered when his vehicle was attacked April 17 by an enemy improvised explosive device in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, according to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).

The DOD release said Austin was assigned to the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.
