A future Greer football player is focused on the Yellow Jackets game.
Greer beat Clinton, 21-7 for its first win of the season after three games. But it was Greer’s defense that dominated the Red Devils.
Clinton was held to minus 81 yards rushing and a total of 51 yards of total offense on 55 plays. That represented less than a yard per play – 0.9 yards.
Greer’s Quay White scored two touchdowns and rushed for 81 yards. Trey Houston’s 11 completions for 166 yards balanced the Yellow Jackets offense.
White scored a pair of first quarter touchdowns. He scored on a 9-yard carry at the 8:49 mark and added a 2-yard run with 5:37 left in the quarter.
Houston’s 27-yard scoring pass to Alex Syphertt in the fourth quarter gave Greer a 14-point cushion. Andres Toro recorded all three extra point kicks.
Syphertt led all receivers in the game, catching six passes from Houston for 112 yards. His TD catch, see photo, was a classic over the shoulder catch from Houston in the end zone.
Clinton’s score came on a Twon Roberson interception of a Houston pass at the 5-yard line that he took into the end zone. Elvis Fitz hit the PAT for the final Clinton point.
It was a typical Greer-Clinton game, plenty of shoving and attitude. Greer was assessed 145 yards on 15 penalties. Clinton was flagged 9 times for 55 yards.
Greer had trouble holding onto the ball turning over all four fumbles to Clinton
The win gives Greer a 1-2 record entering its game versus unbeaten Daniel, 3-0, next Friday at Dooley Field.
Clinton, 1-1, plays at Aiken next week.
