Greer gave Greenville an old-fashioned whupping Friday night in front of a near-capacity crowd at Dooley Field.

Trey Houston, with five scoring strikes, broke a single season touchdown pass reception record, Dre Williams galloped to a 99-yard touchdown and the Greer defense took no prisoners as the Yellow Jackets pounded Greenville, 47-15.

Greer advances to the Upper State Championship game next Friday with South Pointe coming to Dooley Field for a 7:30 p.m. game. South Pointe (13-0) beat Eastside, 48-0.

Houston’s chase to the single season TD passing record, previously held by Mario Cusano, was a virtual countdown throughout the game.

Houston’s five touchdown passes were in this order:

• 27 yards to Braxton Collins, giving Greer the lead for good, 14-7, with 9:41 left in second quarter,

• 38 yards to Mathew Huff, 6:25 second quarter,

• 12 yards Quay White, 4:55 third quarter

• 10 yards Quay White, 4:55 third quarter (tied Cusano’s record)

• 38 yards to Braxton Collins, 8:41 fourth quarter, (set record).

“I don’t think of records when I’m out there,” Houston said. “I just try to keep my poise and play the game. I don’t see anything but the white (goal) lines.”

Next week’s Upper State championship will be Greer’s first since 2003, its last state championship season. Greer also hosted and won all its upper state playoff games that year. The Yellow Jackets are 3-0 at home in the playoffs this year.

“That was my goal all along,” Houston said. “We just have to keep grinding and continue to play together.”

Williams rushed for 218 yards for a 12.1 per carry average. His 99-yard TD run with 2:56 left in the half, was the first play after Greenville was celebrating punter Jack Henegan’s kick being downed at the one-yard line.

“Once I got past the linebacker I knew I was gone,” Williams said. “With one man to beat I baited one way and scored. I couldn’t wait to get the sidelines because everybody goes crazy after scores.”

Williams said one of the season’s goals will be reached next Friday. “It feels good to get to the Upper State,” Williams said. “It’s been awhile since a Greer team has gotten that far and that was a goal since I began playing here.

“We work hard in practice and we have a mindset to win,” Williams said.

Collins, who caught two of Houston’s passes for TDs, said the timing is perfected in practice. “We make the connection in practice and know when things will work in a game.”

Greer’s defense put a hurting on Greenville.

Linebacker Garrett Dill’s sack of Greenville quarterback Davis Beville late in the fourth quarter sent him to the sidelines for good. Beville was holding his ribs as he was walking off the field at the end of the game.

Beville only completed 11 of 30 pass attempts for 117 yards.

The Yellow Jackets held Greenville scoreless in the second half. With 1:44 remaining in the third quarter Greenville went for its first of four failed fourth down conversions.

Greenville was so rattled it was penalized for 12 players on the field and 10 players on the field.

The Yellow Jackets held Greenville to 2.4 yards per rushing carry and 3 yards average per play. Greenville had possession for 27 more plays and had possession for 11.34 minutes more than Greer.

Greenville took the opening kickoff and scored on a Beville to Tydricus Hellams 21-yard pass play. Before the fans were settled, White ran the kickoff back 90 yards, 13 seconds later, for Greer and trailed by one when the PAT failed.
