Michael Huff scored on a five-yard run with 2:37 left in the game to give the Greer Yellow Jackets a 24-21 win over the No. 5 Class 3A ranked Woodruff Wolverines Friday night at W.L. Varner Stadium.

Huff’s second touchdown was needed to counter an unusual Woodruff touchdown with 2:42 left in the third quarter.

Woodruff punter Bowen Waddell ran down a snap over his head, slipped past a Greer defender and connected with Dymitric Ray for a 74-yard touchdown pass. Noah Mallory’s extra point gave Woodruff a 21-17 lead.

Huff’s winning score about 12 minutes later gave Greer its third straight win after opening the season with two straight defeats.

Ethan Alexander’s interception of a Halloran pass with seconds remaining allowed Greer to run out the clock.

Greer is off next week and begins region play on Sept. 30 when Travelers Rest visits Dooley Field.

Woodruff built a 14-0 first quarter lead when quarterback Keegan Holloran ran 70 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. Holloran tossed a 45-yard scoring pass to Jarius Thompson. Good was good on both extra points.

Quay White followed his spectacular 517 yards total offense last week versus Daniel with 172 rushing yards and a second quarter TD. Andres Toro put Greer within seven points, 14-7, of the Wolverines.

Greer earned a safety when Waddell was handed the ball and downed it in the end zone. The half ended with Woodruff leading 14-9.

Huff scored to open the second half and gave Greer its first lead when he ran 27 yards into the end zone. Huff added the two-point conversion to give the Yellow Jackets to a 17-14 advantage.

White averaged 6.6 yards a carry as Greer rushed for 282 yards and 361 yards of total offense. That was 10 more than Woodruff, but the Wolverines gained 236 passing yards.

Holloran completed 15 passes for 149 yards with Keith Pearson his top receiver with six catches and 46 yards.

Greer maintained its penalty-filled ways with 13 infractions totaling 125 yards.
