Incumbents, unopposed confirmed with little fanfare

Published on Wednesday, November 7, 2012

A host of incumbent or unopposed candidates made their way back into office Tuesday night following elections held in Greenville and Spartanburg counties.

The unopposed winners, all Republicans, are:

•  Tommy Stringer, House District 18

• Phyllis Henderson, House District 21

• Rita Allison, House District 36

• Tom Corbin, State Senate, District 5

• Joe Baldwin, Greenville County Council District 18

The summary of the races in Greenville County can be found here.

Trey Gowdy won a second term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Mitt Romney carried Greer voters in the presidential race that saw Barack Obama win a second term.

Baldwin, former Greer city councilman, was defeated in the June primary by Greer’s Mike Barnes. However Barnes, along with about 200 other candidates in the state were disqualified from the ballot when court decisions declared them ineligible for failure to properly file statements of economic interest. Barnes launched an unsuccessful write-in campaign.

Allison beat fellow Republican Jim McMillan who was running as a petition candidate. Allison received 66 percent of the vote – 7,307 - 3,626 – in Spartanburg and Greenville balloting.

The respective county elections office must verify the results.

South Carolina voters approved a statewide constitutional amendment for the lieutenant governor to be elected together with governor, beginning in 2018. The amendment, passed 55.1 – 44.8 percent, will determine who presides over the Senate. The amendment passed 50.93 – 49.07 in Greenville County.
