Mario Irby, Jeff Mills (center) and Vic Irby (right) watched the Greer High School spring practice today. The players were all defensive line teammates on the 2003 Greer High School State Championship football team. Mario and Vic were defensive ends and Mills played tackle.

Travis Perry was inspiring linebackers to continue playing during a tackling drill until the whistle blew. “It’s the easiest sport there is,” Perry said. “Never stop until you hear the whistle,” Perry said.

Another time, Perry, the defensive coordinator, looked at the sidelines and told the players, “Don’t make me put the Irby boys on you.”

Vic and Mario Irby, members of the Greer 2003 state champions coached by Perry, just smiled. Vic and Mario were defensive ends on the championship team. A few minutes later Jeff Mills, another member of the championship team joined the Irbys. That made up three of the four members of the championship defensive line.

Mills said players ask what it was like to play for the championship and if it was fun. “We had a good time that year,” Mills said. “We played together and we’re still together.”

The players still share what Perry and coaches tell today’s players.  “You’ve got to be in the classroom and not out messing around,” Vic said. “If you’re not in shape by the start of summer practice it’s too late.”

Mario looked at Perry inspiring his players and said, “He’s just like he was with us. Coach Perry is a great motivator.”

Vic was asked what he was watching most today. “I’m watching the practice as a whole. I see a lot of potential this year. If the defensive and offensive lines are clicking we’re going to be tough.”

The players said they still cherish the ring they earned winning the state championship and have them secured.
