It might be wise to count the calories that come with each piece of candy when children come home from trick or treating.

Keep the scary calories away this Halloween season with fun size candy portions.

October brings out the vampires, goblins, ghosts and those frightful calories. The scary costumes disappear after the holiday is over, unlike the dreaded extra five pounds that we gain after indulging in these yummy treats.

It can be hard to bypass the candy dishes that are sitting out this time of year.  Although some of our favorite treats come in small individual packages, it is the large bag of candy corn that gets me every year.

But to my surprise, a lot of the candy that we look forward to each Halloween can still be enjoyed in smaller portions without packing on the extra pounds. Fun size packets that are already on store shelves, offer up controlled serving sizes. This gives you a yummy taste of the sweet stuff without going overboard. By using a little portion control and understanding what 100-150 calories actually looks like, you can still enjoy Halloween candy without the fattening regret.

Here are a few sweet options and the calorie count to go with them.  I will start with candy corn, which is my favorite, 150 calories for 20 pieces.

Candy and calorie counts:

• Hershey minis (3 bars) – 126 calories

• Dum Dums (4 pops) – 100

• M&Ms Fun size – 60

• Pixy Sticks – 60

• Blow Pops – 50

• Sweet Tarts – 50

• Skittles – 43

• Jelly beans – 41

• Bubble Yum – 25

• Smarties – 25

• Gumballs – 20

There are sugar-free options like Twizzlers (33 calories each), jelly beans, lollipops, and more. You can also opt for the Weight Watchers and Russell Stover sugar free candies.
