A Lyman man received a 15-year prison sentence Wednesday after he admitted to abusing his newborn son.

Jacob A. Shattuck, 22, pleaded guilty to child abuse with great bodily injury. He will serve 80 percent of Circuit Judge Derham Cole’s prison sentence before he is eligible for release.

On July 9, 2012, doctors at Greenville Memorial Hospital told Spartanburg County sheriff’s deputies they were treating a 3-month-old boy who showed signs of being violently shaken. The injuries included bilateral retinal hemorrhages, a subdural hematoma and repeated seizing that last as long as 30-40 minutes per episode.

The baby was hospitalized in the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit for almost a month and he will most likely be dependent on others for the balance of his life.

Assistant Solicitor Susan Reese told Judge Cole the abuse left the victim legally blind and he is unable to speak or make any sounds. The child cannot sit up or crawl.

The child has nearly a dozen appointments per month with doctors and therapists who are assisting with various aspects of the recovery.

When deputies confronted Jacob Shattuck with the allegations, he admitted to hurting the baby, and he knew what he had done was wrong.
