Man hit and killed walking on shoulder of Locust Hill Road on way to church conference, officials confirm

A man attending an area church conference was hit and killed while walking along a shoulder of a road.

John William Cowan, 61, of Taylors was killed when a 2008 Ford pickup, driven by a 43-year-old man, ran off the side of the road on Locust Hill Road Saturday and hit Cowan, according to law enforcement reports.

Cowan, according to a person who attended the conference at Fairview Baptist Church, was also scheduled to attend.

It was reported at the conference an attendee who was planning to attend, was hit by a vehicle while walking to the church. Later, at the conference, it was reported the attendee died.

The incident happened at 7:13 a.m., less than a half mile west of Greer. Cowan reportedly died at Greenville Memorial Hospital around 11:30 a.m. His cause of death was reported as blunt force trauma.

Law enforcement reported the pickup ran off the right side of the rode and hit Cowan. Cowan died at Greenville Memorial Hospital around 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Highway Patrol troopers reported the pedestrian and the driver were heading west.

The Greenville County coroner will perform an exam on Monday. The driver has been charged with driving too fast for conditions, according to trooper reports.
