Purple Heart winner and WWII hero Eugene H. Mathis, Jr., died Wednesday in Spartanburg.
Eugene H. Mathis, a native of Greenville, earned a degree in Poultry in 1952 and became a passionate supporter of the poultry industry.
Mathis interrupted his studies at Clemson Agricultural College in 1943 to serve in the United States Army in World War II.
Mathis was also awarded two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the Army Occupation Medal.
