Online threats target Jewish, Muslim students at Byrnes, sheriff office reports
Law enforcement will be patrolling Byrnes High School, and will be performing random sweeps of the campus before students return Tuesday and throughout the week, District Five school officials have announced.

This follows after a Byrnes student reported receiving multiple on-line threats against him and the school, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff.

The Spartanburg Sheriff office, on Friday evening told District Five administrators that a Byrnes High School student had reported receiving multiple threats online, against him and Byrnes High School.

The Facebook threats were extremely vulgar in nature, and specifically targeted Jewish and Muslim students at Byrnes, according to the incident report.

The student immediately contacted law enforcement immediately after receiving the threats. Deputies have interviewed the student, and collected multiple screenshots of the threats.

Law enforcement is investigating and working to identify the source of the threats.

The District has asked that additional officers be placed at both Byrnes, and all of Duncan area schools on Tuesday, when students return, and throughout all of next week, a school spokesperson said. In addition, school resource officers will be in place at all other District Five campuses to ensure security.

District Five Superintendent Scott Turner made this statement: “I want to ensure our parents and community that we are taking these threats extremely seriously, and are doing everything possible to make sure our campuses are secure. We are working with law enforcement to ensure the individual who made these threats is found. As always in District Five, the safety of our students and staff is our first priority.”
