Greer High's spring practices culminated Friday with a scrimmage between the Yellow Jackets' offensive and defensive units.

Here's what Greer Head Coach Will Young had to say about his team's work this spring and the unusual format for the spring game.

John Clayton: Tell me about the unique format for the spring game?

Will Young: This year, we added the defensive score. If you scooped it up and scored, it counted this year. We kind of screwed that up last year.

We worked really hard to balance the teams as best we could and balance the scoring as best we could. We went to some colleges and looked at how they do it. We tweaked what we did last year. I hope the kids had a good time -- that's the whole point.

JC: What have your impressions of the team been this spring?

WY: Our kids as a whole are a hard-working group. They come to work every day, and when they come to work they do a great job. I see a lot of effort out there, and that's a good thing. We've got some pretty good talent in some spots, so we're looking forward to working this summer.

JC: What did you learn from the spring game?

WY: We've got them all so spread out, it's been hard to tell, but I thought our second team looked pretty good today, particularly on offense. Some of the young kids looked pretty good. I thought Markel (Warren) did a good job running the ball and the guys up front did a good job blocking for him. I was pretty impressed with them.

JC: What players have surprised you this spring?

WY: The old standbys have done what we thought they would -- Mario (Cusano), Dorian (Lindsey), Troy (Pride) and those guys have done well.

We've had an offensive lineman in Ryan McCullough, who is a sophomore right now. He's really surprised us up front. He's had a good offseason. He's a little smaller than the other guys up there, but he's been a surprise this spring, and I'm really proud of him.

JC: Have your rising seniors stepped up into leadership roles the way you want?

WY: I think so. They're work ethics are outstanding. That core group (of seniors) we have really does a good job -- that's in school, it's in the weight room and it's at practice. It kind of shows. They're just a different class of kids. It's kind of nice to have seniors like that. Some of our young kids will see it and do it, too.
