Kevin Casey, 40, pleaded guilty to two counts of felony driving under the influence with a death and felony driving under the influence with great bodily injury. Casey will serve 85 percent of Circuit Judge Mark Hayes’ prison sentence before he is eligible for release.
The Oct. 15, 2010 wreck killed Steven Ray Mills, 20, and Megan Celeste Warren, 17, both of Greer. Jason Simmons, 24, of Woodruff, sustained injuries to his right shoulder, his left hip and his liver.
Mills and Warren were pronounced dead at the scene of the 12:13 a.m. crash. They were passengers on a three-seat motorcycle driven by Simmons. Casey’s vehicle rear-ended the motorcycle while both vehicles were headed south on Highway 417 near Highway 101. Casey’s vehicle was going 91 miles per hour at impact and drove another 300 feet before stopping. His blood alcohol level was .21.
Several members of the victims’ families appeared in court to share the impact of the crime and to ask Judge Hayes to impose a long sentence.
“This case graphically illustrates the many dangers of drinking and driving,” Solicitor Barry Barnette said. “Kevin Casey’s reckless actions took two lives and he inflicted life-changing injuries on his third victim. He will have plenty of time behind bars to think about the consequences of his pathetic actions.”
Casey’s prior criminal record included two convictions for driving under the influence and he had a third case pending out of Union County at the time of fatal wreck.
