Shiflet, Terry help sink Riverside from long range

LaBrian Shiflet and Dre Terry took turns putting on a three-point shooting clinic as Greer beat Riverside 75-47 tonight to complete a 3-game sweep of its opponents this week.

Greer (5-1) hosts Byrnes Tuesday night at 7:30 in a rematch of a game played last Tuesday in Duncan that Greer won 64-63.

Shiflet and Terry scored five three-pointers with Shiflet bunching four of his in the first period and Terry making four in the third quarter. They both produced 14-points in those respective quarters. Shiflet outscored Riverside (0-2) in the first period and Terry was a point short of matching the Warriors in the third.

Their scoring ignited Greer to a 23-point first quarter and 26-point third as the Yellow Jackets overwhelmed their neighbor rivals.

Terry’s 23 points made him the first Yellow Jacket to outscore teammate Shiflet, who had 21 points, in a game this season.  Fleming added 13 points with one three-point goal.

Despite Greer’s scoring effort, Greer Head Basketball Coach Jeff Neely was more pleased with the play of his defense.  “What’s carrying us is our defense. We’re causing so many steals and turnovers that we’ve now got to fine-tune our defense,” Neely said.

And Neely said this group matches better than athletes of former teams. “I like our athletes. They are some of the best athletes I have coached,” Neely said. “If we can coach them up we’ll be OK.”

There’s still concern with the Yellow Jackets making turnovers on their transition on offense and missing put-ins from underneath the basket. “We’re not hitting the boards and we’re missing those bunny’s (put backs) under the basket,” he said.

Riverside offered little resistance as Greer methodically built the lead to as many as 33 points at 74-43 with 2:46 remaining. That was enough to convince Neely to pull his starters en masse at that point.

Jaman Whitson scored 18 points and Brandon Leverette 12 for the only two Warriors in double figures.
