SMC to present awards to Pioneering Women

Spartanburg Methodist College, in celebration of Women’s History Month, is hosting Pioneering Women 2013 on Friday, March 1 to acknowledge their leadership in the community.

SMC president, Colleen P. Keith, will recognize nine women and present them with an award for their commitment and leadership in their respective fields.

The presentation will be held in Ellis Hall at 10:30 a.m., followed a luncheon. The keynote speaker will be Hope Blackley, Spartanburg County Clerk of Court and 2012 Pioneering Women Award Recipient. 

“The Pioneering Women awards provide us with a great opportunity to celebrate women in our community who are making a difference close to home, around our state and beyond,” said Leah Pruitt, Director of Alumni Relations. Awards and recipients will include:

• Alumna:  Jill Johnson, Spartanburg Methodist College

• Media: Amanda Bass, Belle Magazine

• Public Service/Government:  Judge Ponda Caldwell, Spartanburg County

• Missions: Jayne McQueen, Mobile Meals

• Philanthropy; Mary Thomas, Spartanburg County Foundation

• Political Leadership: Harriett Rucker, South Carolina Board of Education, South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities

• Business: Sue Schneider, Spartanburg Water

• Creative Leadership: Peggy Magarahan, Habitat for Humanity, Spartanburg Little Theater

• Education: Donna Christopher, Byrnes High School
