Becky Burke has been named the new USC Upstate women’s basketball coach.
Burke coached at Division II University of Charleston (W.Va.) the past two years and accumulated a 48-14 record.
Burke replaces Tammy George who resigned in May after 15 years as head coach.
Burke was named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association 30-under-30 list in 2019.
“I felt like USC Upstate was a place where we could win before I even came on my campus visit. And after visiting, that was confirmed for me. It comes down to that simply. This is a place where we can recruit because of the campus support and resources and I think the conference is winnable,” Burke said in Upstate’s announcement.
Burke spent two seasons as head coach of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Prescott, Ariz., where she led the new Eagles program to a remarkable record of success in just two seasons of competition. Burke led ERAU to a 35-18 two-year overall record.
Burke is a former standout player at the University of Louisville (class of 2012). She scored more than 1,000 points and was the team’s leading scorer as a sophomore and senior. Louisville played in the national championship game her sophomore year and the team returned to the Sweet 16 a year later.
“From my first phone call with her I felt her tremendous energy, contagious enthusiasm, personal charisma and commitment to excellence in all facets of running a collegiate basketball program. I have no doubt she will lead our program to new heights,” Upstate Athletic Director Daniel Feig said.
