The building permit for the $768,500 upfit of the Greer Plaza and Walmart Neighborhood Market façade has been filed with the city. Work has already begun on the buildings. Belk is not included in the new façade project. Sherman Construction of Piedmont has the contract.

The parking lot is undergoing a complete renovation with islands, new lights and landscaping.  Greer Plaza is owned by a Miami, Fla., firm.

The Walmart grocery store averages 29,000 items and the Greer store is opening in a former Winn-Dixie space. A pharmacy, self-serve deli, prepared and frozen foods and an organic section are featured. Food products already available at Walmart stores will not be taken off their shelves.

The Walmart Neighborhood Market, a 24-hour store, first reported by GreerToday.com is the first of its kind in South Carolina. Lawrenceville, Ga., opened the first Neighborhood Market in that state last month. Walmart is planning on opening 80-100 of the grocery stores nationwide this year.

The store will employ 80-90 people.
