Greer flipped Westside in the season’s opening high school football game Friday night at Westside.
Dre Williams rushed for 141 yards and scored twice to lead Greer. His 75-yard touchdown run in the first quarter with just under four minutes played, shocked Westside. Trey Houston’s 38-yard scoring strike to Cameron Martin four minutes later, 7:08, gave Greer a 14-0 lead.
The 28-point difference for Greer helped erase the same margin that Westside beat Greer last year (38-10). Greer returned the favor to the Rams by winning at Westside.
The Yellow Jackets exploded for 28 second-half points.
Houston and Martin connected on their second touchdown pass plays, 28 yards, in the third quarter.
Quay White scored on a one-yard run, Williams scored on a 10-yard run and Matthew Huff’s 4-yard TD run in the fourth quarter wrapped up the Yellow Jackets TD scoring. Edwin Sales made all five of his extra point kicks.
Westside coach Scott Early said, “Greer is a team that can compete for a the AAAA state championship. Last year, we were what Greer is this year.”
Greer had 408 total offense yards, 252 of them rushing.
Houston completed 16 of 21 passes for 158 yards.
Westside’s Hunter Marchbanks scored on an 11-yard run in the first quarter and Traye Carson, a receiver, scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter.
Byrnes visits Greer at Dooley Field next Friday in a 7:30 p.m. game. Byrnes plays at Myrtle Beach Saturday.
