Hours after Greer pulled off one of its most exciting playoff football victories in Yellow Jackets history – 45-42 over Westwood –  head coach Will Young was en route to Charleston to spend time with his mother, Kathy, recovering from a kidney transplant.

A complication from the transplant occurred when a blood vessel attached to the new kidney burst, which led to massive internal bleeding. Young said Sunday, Kathy is recovering and Monday doctors would be deciding the next steps en route to recovery.

“Monday is a big day,” Young said. “We’re hoping to get her off the respirator and back onto dialysis.”

Young spent the weekend before the Emerald game at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital, returning Monday and did the same routine after Friday’s win over Westwood. “I get to spend some time with her and give my dad a chance to get some rest,” Young said.

Young’s mother types on an iPad, “and tells us what to tell the kids,” Young said.

Technology has also enhanced how high school coaches grade video and analyze opponents. Teams exchange videos electronically and then break them down any number of ways – personnel, formations, downs and yardage or almost anything imaginative. Traditionally coaches would meet halfway between their next opponents’ schools and swap film the Saturday after Friday games.

“I’ve probably done more work here than if I was home,” Young said.

Young was expected to return Monday to continue preparations for  Greer versus Daniel, its third round playoff opponent. Young graduated Daniel and won a state championship playing for the Lions in 1991.

Friday’s game will be at Dooley Field at 7:30 p.m. Playoff admission is $7.
