Sixth-grade Riverside Middle School student Paris Christie won second place in a local illustrated poetry contest sponsored by the Western Carolina chapter of the American Chemical Society.
The contest was held in conjunction with National Chemistry Week.
The Riverside Middle School boys' basketball team defeated Northwest, Tanglewood and Mauldin to win the pre-season basketball tournament. Eighth-grader Jordan Woodruff was named tournament MVP.

Tim Lowe, President of Lowes Foods, will be the keynote speaker for the 78th Annual Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce.
The event is Feb. 4, 6-9 p.m. at Embassy Suites Greenville Golf Resort and Conference Center.
Lowes Foods, a Carolinas-based grocer with locations in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, announced its second new store within the Greer and Greenville market.
The store will be built at the new Village Market-East shopping center on the northwest corner of Woodruff Road and Sunnydale Drive in the Five Forks area of Simpsonville. Construction will begin in spring 2016 with a targeted opening date in spring 2017.
