31 area students nominated to attend service academies

Thirty-one students have been nominated to attend the U.S. Service Academies. The nominees now compete to receive an appointment directly from the service academy.

“Each of these young men and women has already contributed so much to their communities. It is my privilege to nominate these outstanding students to attend one of our service academies," Rep. Trey Gowdy (S.C. – 4) said. "Their commitment to serving this country should be inspiring to us all.”

Blue Ridge Middle Junior Beta Club has successful convention

Blue Ridge Middle School's scrapbook, featuring the theme “Making History With Beta”, placed second overall in the state at the Junior Beta Club Convention at Myrtle Beach Jan. 16-17. The scrapbook highlighted the work of Blue Ridge students to serve their community and leave their mark on history.

Sixty-three Blue Ridge Middle School students attended the state convention and participated in a wide range of academic and artistic competitions.

Education Foundation presents $16,550 to 15 school, community projects

The Greater Greer Education Foundation presented $16,550 inj grant money to 15 school and community projects Thursday. Award winners present are left to right: Jamie Garrett, Sara Arndt, Andrea Moore, Lisa Hall, Jenny Hunter, Kim Derring, Tonya Williams, Diane Jackson, Susan Ward, Karen Cummings, Alicia Keller and Jane Mills.

The Greater Greer Education Foundation presented  $16,550 in grant money to 15 school and community projects in Greenville and Spartanburg counties at a news conference Tuesday at Greer City Hall.

The grants, made possible by funds from the October 2013 Education Gala, ranged from $400 to $1,500.

Students selected for Discovery Flight program to learn about aviation
JAN 16, 2014

Thirty-four students interested in a career in aviation have been selected to participate in a program that includes 45 minutes of ground instruction and a 45-minute flight.

Discovery Flight is a program that targets students who are interested in a career in aviation and would like to find out more about the requirements. The aviation industry forecasts a need for pilots and aircraft mechanics in the future as many veteran pilots are scheduled to retire.
