A balloon launch is planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 29 after the memorial drop-in for Stan Christofferson who died last Friday.
The 100 yellow balloons, sold for $1, will be launched at City Park. Money raised from the balloon launch and memorial donations to the “Stand Up For Stan” fund, in lieu of flowers, will help with medical bills for Christofferson as well as other families that are struggling with cancer.
Greer Idol Teen auditions will be held Thursday, May 24 at the Greer City Park Amphitheater from 7-8 p.m. It will precede Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 2), the first Moonlight Movie of the season.
The Harry Potter movie is rated PG-13 for some sequences of intense action violence and frightening images.
Greer High School alums were everywhere.
They dined, in classes, at Rivera’s, in the courtyard at Wild Ace Pizza and Pub, atop the roof at the Cazbah, BIN112, Great Bay Oyster House and other downtown restaurants. Reservations tonight were made by “Class of … “ instead of individuals. Many visited Acme General Store, the Shoppes at the Grapevine and walked downtown as one – one big reunion of Greer High School graduates, former students, friends and acquaintances.

Greer Station and City Park will be abuzz with the biggest reunion the city and Greer High School alumni has ever hosted on Saturday.
Carl Howell, Deputy Fire Marshal of the Greer Fire Department, who is adept at gauging crowd size, estimates about 2,000 graduates, spouses, faculty and associates of Greer High School will be social butterflies Saturday. “I’m sure there are a lot of other place like Greer. But there’s never been a community get together like ours that I am aware,” Howell said.
City officials gave a sneak preview of the Greer Memorial Hospital Freedom Blast today with Whitney Walters of the Groove Planet band singing the national anthem while military representatives presented the colors.
The 4th annual Freedom Blast is scheduled Saturday, June 30 at Greer City Park from 5-10 p.m. and will feature a salute to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. The evening finale will be a fireworks show presented by internationally renowned Zambelli Fireworks.
The Cannon Centre will become the name for Greer’s multi-purpose event center at the City Hall complex, said City Administrator Ed Driggers. The name change will be on city council’s May 22 agenda.
The renovation of the Horace McKown Center and name change keeps the history of the building and its location intact. The building fronts Cannon Street.
City Council unanimously approved, 7-0, amending the comprehensive fee schedule for event halls at Greer City Hall, City Park and the renovated McKown Center.
Laurie Campbell, Events Supervisor, and council members discussed leasing each component (event hall, gazebo and amphitheater) of the park or its entirety that includes all the venues excluding the McKown Center. Council did not discuss the actual fee schedule and there were no public or businesses speaking for or against the fees.
