Public hearing precedes council's vote on distracted driving ordinance

A public hearing is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. today for residents to voice their concerns on a proposed ordinance that could make it unlawful to use a mobile telephone for text messaging, electronic media or emailing while operating a vehicle in Greer.
Lit cigarette ignited brush fire, $1.4 million in damage includes 4 homes

A lit cigarette was ruled the cause of a grass fire that raged out of control last Wednesday causing $1.761 million of damage that left four families displaced at Riverwood Farms.
Fire Chief Chris Harvey told City Council Tuesday night the actual cigarette was found along the road right away behind 306 Gladstone Way. “We can tell where the fire started by a V-shaped burn pattern from the cigarette that was found,” Harvey said.
Campobello woman receives 20-year prison sentence for killing infant in breast milk case

A Campobello woman received a 20-year prison sentence Friday for killing her daughter with a morphine overdose from breast milk.
Stephanie I. Greene, 39, was found guilty of homicide by child abuse, involuntary manslaughter and unlawful conduct toward a child during a four-day jury trial that concluded Thursday in Spartanburg. Circuit Judge Derham Cole sentenced Greene in a hearing Friday morning. She will serve 80 percent of the prison sentence before she is eligible for release.
