A $15,000 grant from Citizens Building and Loan (CBL) to Greer Community Ministries has helped with operational costs for Meals On Wheels and Senior Diners. Left to right: Jennifer Jones (CBL Senior Vice President), Cindy Simpler (Executive Director GCM) and Tommy Johnson (President/CEO of CBL).
“It’s always helpful to have Citizens Building and Loan to partner with us in our operating costs,” Cindy Simpler, Executive Director of GCM, said. “It then makes it a lot easier for us to apply for grants (for programs).”
CBL traditionally helps the non-profits in Greer but its timing of providing grants is not always scheduled. “When the needs are great we can see that and respond,” Rhonda Turner, Vice President at CBL, a member of the CB&L Charitable Foundation. Turner said that was how the grant to GCM developed.
The first quarter – January, February and March – are typically the slowest months for donations with June/July/August the next lull. Simpler said donations like CBL’s helps maintain Meals On Wheels and Senior Dining.
GCM is also nearing the completion of its Fabulous 5 campaign for essential donations it announced a month ago. The five basic food items – boxed cereal, oatmeal, grits, beef stew and spaghetti sauce – generally are more expensive and difficult to keep in stock. Simpler said those core products are a priority and tend to be among the first items taken off the shelf.
Bring donations to GCM, 738 S. Line Street Extension between 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
