Shuler Bentley had a perfect day at Old Dominion University's football scrimmage on Saturday.
Bentley, 20, two-time South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year at Byrnes High School, completed 12 of 12 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns.
With ODU entering its third of five weeks of spring practice, Bentley’s command of the high-powered offense solidified him as the heir apparent to replace Taylor Heinicke, who threw for 14,959 yards, the sixth most in Division I history.
Bentley shadowed senior Heinicke last year, as a red-shirt. He ran a spread offense similar to ODU for four year at Byrnes.
Two other quarterbacks are vying for the ODU starting job – junior college transfer Joey Verhaegh and freshman Blake LaRussa.
Bentley set the South Carolina high school league record 13,245 yards passing and passed for 177 career touchdowns.
