Travelers Rest businessman Mike Burns filed today to run in the Jan. 22, 2013 Republican Primary for the S.C. House District 17 seat left vacant by the recent resignation of Tom Corbin.

Burns filed the necessary documents and paid the filing fee at the Greenville County Republican Party headquarters on Wade Hampton Boulevard in Greenville.

“Today marks the first official step of my efforts to give the people of District 17 a person who is committed to using common sense in government,” Burns said. “The people of northern Greenville County – as well as the rest of this state – work hard for their money. They realize that money is needed to make any entity operate, but they also expect their state to be wise in planning and executing necessary expenditures.

“That includes creating legislation designed to maximize cost-effective use of taxpayer money and to minimize government regulations – however well intended – that restrict our economic growth,” Burns said.

Corbin was elected to both the House and Senate seats in the general election Nov. 6. Corbin resigned the House seat Nov. 12 to become a State Senator.

Filing for party primaries closes Dec. 10. After the primaries a runoff, if needed, would be Feb. 5. The special election involving all party nominees will be March 12.

Burns, 60, a 1974 graduate of the University of South Carolina, has been involved in textile, construction and restaurant enterprises during his three decades in the business world. Burns and his wife, Anne, have four children and three grandchildren. He and his wife are longtime members of Enoree Baptist Church.
