Alicia Keller, left, was awarded a $1,500 grant by the Greater Greer Education Foundation for Chandler Creek Elementary school's tutoring and mentoring initiative. Principal Jane Mills will introduce the program Friday. GGEF director David Dolge made the presentation.
Business, community and church members are invited to a “Friends of the C.R.E.E.K.” volunteer breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Friday to hear about the initiative and for the public to voice their ideas as the hands-on program begins to take shape.
Principal Jane Mills said the idea is to match adult mentors with students at risk of falling behind in specific areas.
“We did a SurveyMonkey to see what our greatest needs are,” Mills said. She said students may need help in math but it may be more specific to algebra than addition.
“It will be more of individualized mentoring,” Mills said.
Alicia Keller was the recipient of a Greater Greer Education Foundation grant that will help put into motion a system that will identify and nurture students at risk of falling behind.
“We want children to feel like someone is there pushing them,” Keller said. “Kids need tutoring and we want them to have an advocate.”
Mills said the idea of community support is “We’ve all got to join hands for a common purpose.”
The school is at 301 Chandler Road. Visitors are reminded to come to the main entrance. Call 864-355-2400 for more information.
