A $500,000 grant has been awarded to the City of Greer from the Appalachian Regional Commission to help fund the downtown streetscape project.
The Commission awards grants to projects that address one or more of the five goals identified in its strategic plan. The City’s application was granted under Core Natural and Cultural Assets as it leverages the Region’s natural and cultural heritage assets.
“We are very pleased and excited to accept this grant. The streetscape project will enhance the appearance of Greer Station, re-define its sense of place, create an energetic destination that is safe to walk, bike or drive through, stabilize its existing businesses, and provide form, features, and function required to attract new and diverse business establishments,” Greer City Administrator Ed Driggers stated in the city’s announcement.
Meanwhile, the planned alley and parking lot work has been delayed until May 29. The five-week work plan includes:
• Paving and improving access to alleyways behind Trade Street businesses, and between Dance Visions and First Presbyterian Church’s Kirk Hall.
• Repaving, striping and lighting the parking lot behind Kirk Hall.
• Repaving, striping and lighting the Depot parking lot.
• Creating a new paved parking lot with striping and lighting behind the Depot.
The streetscape project is scheduled to begin in late summer, according to the city. It will include:
• Replace failing roadway and curb and gutter.
• Provide for ADA accessibility.
• Implement a shared street design.
• Install wayfinding and gateway signage.
• Make landscaping improvements.
• Install outdoor furniture and fixture enhancements.
