City Council unanimously approved a resolution to give $100,000 to the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce to fund a Michelin Development Fund geared to providing loans to businesses within the city or locating here.

Michelin will match the fund for an initial investment of $200,000, said John Tully, President of Michelin Development. Tully also said a third party may provide an additional match for a $300,000 initial fund.

Council authorized City Administrator Ed Driggers to negotiate a memorandum of understanding with fund officials.

Allen Green, President/CEO of the Greer Chamber of Commerce, and Tully presented the partnership on Aug. 13.

“It is a model of sustainability for our community,” Mayor Rick Danner said. Councilman Wayne Griffin (District 2) said, “It’s an outstanding opportunity.”

The loan, offered at prime plus two percent, will be capped at $50,000. The money will be loaned through a Bank and Trust. Michelin Development will be the administrator and coordinate the process. Business classes, Quick Books and other resources are made available through Michelin.
