Brett Claycamp acknowledges the standing ovation Greer fans gave him Friday night at Dooley Field. Claycamp was honored for his service to sacrifice.
Claycamp played football at Greer High School and was honored Friday before the annual Jacket Bowl with rival Union High School. Fans gave Claycamp a prolonged standing ovation.
Greer High Principal Marion Waters presented Claycamp and his fiancé, Catherine Owens. “I’m proud of Brett and it’s something we should do for all our soldiers,” Waters said.
Greer Head Football Coach Will Young designated offensive lineman Cole Henderson one of the four captains Friday night. Henderson wears the same number Claycamp wore –67 – during his playing days at Greer. Claycamp also played on the line.
Henderson said he was unaware Claycamp wore the same number. Greer beat Union 31-28 to gain the lead in the series, 23-22-1.
Claycamp returns to Walter Reed Army Medical Center Sunday for surgery to repair nerves in his arm that will take 18-months to rehabilitate. He has been home for the past 20 days.
Claycamp and Owens are scheduled to be married in June 2014.
