Greer leads the series versus Riverside with 35-6.
Greer beat cross-town rival Riverside 49-6 Saturday night at Dooley Field for its second straight win to open the season. Riverside lost its second straight game.
Mariano Cusano threw four touchdowns passes, three to Dorian Lindsey, and passed for 230 yards to lead the Yellow Jackets. Adrian McGee rushed for 123 yards on only seven carries including a 74-yard touchdown run.
Greer’s defense missed a shutout when Aaron Odom completed a 52-yard scoring pass to Jeremiah Bogan with 1:38 left in the game.
Riverside’s offense had a tough night, thanks to the Yellow Jackets defense, mustering 145 total yards, only 33 rushing.
The Yellow Jackets’ Cusano opened the team’s first two series concluding in touchdown passes to Lindsey covering 59 and 69 yards, respectively.
McGee scooted 74 yards on the first play of Greer’s third possession and Nick Roberson’s extra point gave Greer half of its first-half points for a 21-0 lead.
Cusano scored on a two-yard keeper, Troy Pride returned a punt 56 yards for a touchdown and a Cusano to Lindsey 17-yard TD pass play closed out Greer’s first-half scoring spree.
Pride, a two-way performer, caught three passes for 24 yards, returned his one punt return for a TD and had a 38-yard kickoff return.
Riverside’s Reid Banish carried 13 times for 32 yards and quarterback Aaron Odom’s 139 yards passing was the result of eight completions on 18 attempts.
Punter Jordan Peden punting six times for a 28.5-yard average illustrated the difficulty of Riverside’s offense failing to mount drives. His longest was 33 yards.
Greer built a 42-0 halftime lead and the game was virtually over with Yellow Jackets Head Coach Will Young substituting freely in the second half. Cusano’s fourth touchdown pass, 15 yards to Alex Syphertt with 8:43 left in the third quarter, was the only Greer score in the second half. Nick Roberson’s extra point ended Greer’s offense.
Heavy rain and lightning throughout Friday evening forced the game to be postponed to Saturday. A huge crowd that turned out Friday was considerably reduced Saturday.
The win sets up the Yellow Jackets Bowl next Friday at Dooley Field. Greer is 2-0 and Union County 0-3. Union lost to Spartanburg Friday night in a game that ended at 2:30 in the morning after a total of two long rain and lightning delays that lasted for more than three hours and 30 minutes.
Riverside plays at Woodmont next Friday.
