Zach Glidden worked himself free and caught a desperation pass from quarterback Mario Cusano as No. 7 ranked Greer beat Union County Friday night.
The No. 7 ranked Greer Yellow Jackets won their first three games of the season for the first time since 1995. It also gave Greer a 22-22 tie in the Jacket Bowl, designated by the teams, both nicknamed Yellow Jackets.
Lindsey set up Greer’s final drive when he returned a punt to Union’s 32-yard line. With seconds remaining Greer faced a fourth and nine at the Union 28-yard line. Cusano bought time by scrambling away from the Union County defenders and then found Glidden alone for the winning points.
Cusano completed 12 of 19 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for 97 yards on 11 carries. Lindsey had 8 catches for 76 yards and 3 TDs – 1 rushing and 2 receiving. Adrian McGee provided solid running with 125 yards on 27 rushes.
Union tied the game 22-22 with 3:04 left to set the stage for the final frantic drives.
Union gambled on 4th down and scored on a 69-yard play and added the PAT to tie the score.
A 32-yard Union field goal by Blake Berry to end the third quarter put Union within reach at 22-15.
Greer had a chance to win the game with two minutes remaining on a 45-yard field goal attempt but Andrew Messer’s kick failed when a low snap from center threw the timing of the play off. An earlier bad snap cost Greer an extra point that could have given Greer a valuable 23rd point.
Union built a 12-3 lead on Shi Smith’s 47-yard TD reception and Cusano’s first TD pulled Greer to within 12-10 at the close of the half.
Lindsey’s 3-yard run on the opening drive of the third quarter put Greer ahead 16-12. He added a 6-yard run in for the 22-12 advantage before Union County came back.
Greer begins region play next Friday at Emerald.
