The Greater Greer Education Foundation awarded 16 scholarships totalling $9,000 today to students in each of six high schools in the greater Greer area.

Students are selected by the guidance department of each school and submitted to the Foundation. The Foundation in turn presents scholarship funds to the technical school or college on behalf of the student.

The $9,000 distributed today brings the total to $26,500 the Foundation has awarded this year. The GGEF has awarded $57,650 in grants to schools, educators and students since its 2011 beginning.

Margaret Burch, founder of the foundation, said she was pleased with today's awards but wished more students would benefit. "I feel very good but it's never enough. You can't give more unless you raise more."

Burch's vision is to raise $100,000 at one Foundation event. The next opportunity is Oct. 26 when the Foundation's Gala is scheduled. The Swingin' Medallions will perform.
