Ensley, who played offensive and defensive line for Greer, raised $1,400 to make a mission trip to Nicaragua before summer practice began. He worked in children missionaries.
Reese Hannon, quarterback for the 9-2 Yellow Jackets, was among the athletes honored. Hannon was a finalist for Mr. Football and threw two touchdown passes in last Saturday’s North win over the South in the South Carolina all-star football game.
Luke Howell, Eric Lamb and John Dawson, Greer seniors, joined Hannon selected as football-academic standouts. The Smiley Howell award is named for Luke Howell’s father, who lost his battle to cancer.
Julie Mason, a captain for the Greer color guard, and Chelsea Genobles, a co-captain for the cheerleading team, were also honored.
Recently fired Coastal Carolina head football coach David Bennett was the guest speaker. Bennett compiled a 16-year overall college record of 126-56. He coached at Catawba seven years before becoming Coastal’s first head football coach. He was 63-39 during his 9-years at Coastal.
