Freezing rain, sleet forces schools to dismiss early

Cold overnight temperatures froze this fountain at a business on Pelham Road. Temperatures are scheduled to remain below freezing most of tjhe day with the forecast of freezing rain, sleet and a light snow with only a dusting.

Freezing rain is falling in the greater area making bridges and overpasses treacherous and forcing school districts in Greenville and Spartanburg County to dismiss classes.

The temperature at 10 a.m. was 26 degrees with some freezing rain. Sidewalks were beginning to see slight patches of ice pellets.

Greenville County schools were dismissed at 10 a.m. and Spartanburg County schools will let out at 11 a.m. All evening extracurricular and athletic events have been cancelled.

Buses will run their regular routes and students will be supervised until picked up by their bus or parent.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for most of the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday. Temperatures were forecast to reach about 34 degrees today and back into the 20s late tonight.

Crews began spraying salt brine on bridges and overpasses.
