The Furman University Board of Trustees approved promotions and/or tenure for 14 faculty members and granted emeritus status to four professors who are retiring this summer.
The trustees also recognized the contributions of five board members whose terms will expire June 30.
Faculty members promoted to the rank of full Professor were Christopher A. Healy (Computer Science), Harry H. Kuoshu (Asian Studies), George B. Lipscomb (Education), Julian A. Reed (Health Sciences), Sandra Roberson (Business Administration and Accounting), and Thomas I. Smythe, Jr. (Business Administration and Accounting).
Those receiving tenure and promoted to the rank of Associate Professor were Maegan N. Azar (Theatre Arts), Elizabeth L. Bouzarth (Mathematics), Gretchen Braun (English), Jason D. Hansen (History), Lane J. Harris (History), Janet D. Kwami (Communication Studies), Stephanie M. Knouse (Modern Languages and Literatures), and Jason S. Rawlings (Biology).
The board granted emeritus status to four retiring professors—William H. Aarnes (English), John M. Garihan (Earth and Environmental Sciences), Raymond F. Moss (Health Sciences), and Harlan R. Patton (Modern Languages and Literatures).
All promotions, tenure and emeritus status become effective Aug. 1.
The board recognized five trustees whose terms will expire June 30. They are Robert E. Hill, Jr., of Ponte Vedra, Fla., Stanford J. Jennings of Alpharetta, Ga., Juan D. Johnson of Lithonia, Ga., David Trone of Potomac, Md., and John C. Yates of Atlanta, Ga. Hill just completed a two-year term as chair of the board.
