Both teams took Thanksgiving off and practiced over the weekend. They held abbreviated practices today. The Greer jayvee girls and boys hosted Byrnes’ jayvees this evening.
The Greer boys are 2-1, losing to Dorman and beating Broome and Spartanburg Christian Academy at a tournament the Yellow Jackets hosted before the holidays.
LaBrian Shiflet, a junior guard, is averaging 33.6 points. He has made 31 of 37 free throw attempts. That is indicative of Greer making 78 percent of its free throws (53 for 60).
Dre Terry is averaging 11points a game for the Yellow Jackets.
Greer coach Jeff Neely worked the team last Friday and Saturday at 8 a.m. practices. “We find out a lot about the players at 8 a.m.,” Neely said.
Neely had the players practicing to music, often turned high making coaching difficult, unless with hand signals. Neely turns off the music when coaching and teaching is being done.
“Gymnasiums can become loud and players need to get use to the noise,” Neely said. “They eventually become oblivious to it.
“We’re working on our music. The players must listen to mine A more player-friendly station was found during practice.
Neely explained that there is a method to his drills. “There’s a reason for everything. Everything we do today is important.”
The Greer girls are 1-2 after hosting the Lady Jacket Invitational before Thanksgiving. The win came against Greenville Tech Charter and the losses to Eastside and Wade Hampton.
