Greer offensive lineman Jamal Rogers injured his leg and had to wait more than 20 minutes for an EMS vehicle to reach Dooley Field.
The Stallions were off and running and didn’t stop until South Pointe won its 25th straight victory and beat the Greer Yellow Jackets, 67-21, for the Upstate Class 4A Championship. Greer (12-2) saw its winning streak end at 11 games.
South Pointe, winners of three consecutive state championships, plays Hartsville for the state championship Dec. 2 at 6:30 p.m.
Quarterback Derion Kendrick, a Clemson University recruit, was virtually a one-player wrecking crew. He figured in seven of nine South Pointe touchdowns – five running, two passing – and steered the Stallions to 678 yards of offense – 451 running, 227 passing.
Greer ended its season ranked No. 5 in the state in Class 4A with a 12-2 record. It was the first time the Yellow Jackets reached the fourth round of the playoffs since their 2003 state championship.
South Pointe, which dressed out about 80 players, is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A and No. 5 in the USA Today national high school poll.
Both teams combined for 1,163 total yards with Greer running 20 more plays than South Pointe.
The Stallions built a 33-0 halftime lead.
“We couldn’t adjust to their speed,” said linebacker Quantavious Cohen. “We knew that the quarterback (Kendrick) was the key to slowing down their offense.”
The third quarter was a slugfest of epic proportions. Seven TDs, 48 points, were scored in 12 minutes – three TDs by Greer and four by South Pointe.
Quay White (156 rushing yards) ran for an 82-yard TD to get Greer on the scoreboard on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. Following another South Pointe TD White scored on a 27-yard run, then another South Pointe TD, and Greer’s Matthew Huff ended the longest drive of the game, when he ran five yards for a score to end a 14-play drive, bringing Greer to within 47-21.
Easley and Laurens scored 66 points against Greer in 1935 was the most points scored against the Yellow Jackets.
South Pointe’s speed factored in Greer’s game plan. The 51 rushes for 332 yards were intended to keep the Stallions off the field. It didn’t work out that way. South Pointe had two scoring drives of one-play, two four-play TD drives, and one five-play drive.
“We didn’t click early,” said offensive tackle Bradly Thompson. “We came out in the second half and scored some points. Unfortunately they did, too.”
