Meet the 3A Region III Greer champion girls soccer team. Back row, left to right: Evelyn Gallardo, Rachel Rosario, Dakota Fitzgerald, Faith Estrada, Tori Graham, Taylor Waldon, Christina Waldon, Alex Banks. Front row, left to right, Meghan Rood, Jessica Wilds, Allison Clifton, Kendall Strawhorn, Ilse Isidro, Alejandra Maldonado, Silvia Ramirez. Coach Rob DePaol is in front.
The Greer girls play Monday and the Greer boys play Tuesday. Both games are 7 p.m.
The boys and girls, winners of the school’s first soccer championships and both in one season, were wrapped up before the season’s final games.
First-year grls coach Rob DePaol got some outstanding play from seniors Dakota Fitzgerald and Kendall Strawhorn. “Those two girls are the most dynamic on the team,” DePaol said. In contrast, freshman Allison Clifton starts in goal. “Silvia Ramirez and Meghan Rood have also played well.”
DePaol coached at Converse College and USC Upstate before coming to Greer.
Jorge Santos led the Greer boys to the soccer championship in his second year as coach.
Santos, hired last year, is a graduate of Newberry College. He attended Spartanburg Methodist College and played soccer for both schools.
Santos didn’t make any promises when he was hired, only that his teams would be competitive and professional on and off the field.
