It's thumbs up for Greer Head Football Coach Will Young.

It's thumbs up for Greer Head Football Coach Will Young.

Noah Hannon, a freshman with the Greer High School football team, didn’t know what to expect on the side of the road this morning.

Hannon said he found a car door.

Head Coach Will Young took his team on its annual road cleanup on Country Club and Gap Creek roads, both adjacent to Greer High School. It’s part of the community service Young suggests his players provide in return for the community’s support.

Players also participated in the Greer Family Fest helping children with crafts.

Trent Barbare, Nakeem Hoke, DeAndre Moren and Thomas Sullivan were comparing notes on what they found. An iPhone was the prize find and turned over the staff, tires, alcohol and beer containers, a dead raccoon and some unmentionables that obviously came from infants.

Tyler Wright, a junior, said a vehicle pass with its occupants shouting, “Go Ridge.” Wright’s response, “All I said with three-peat,” referring to Greer’s two-straight wins over Blue Ridge.

Senior Roland Nall, arguably the biggest person on the team playing offensive line, laughed when asked if he hauled much trash today. “I picked up some but the underclassmen carried it,” he said.

Greer has played in a series of 7-on-7 passing tournaments. The Yellow Jackets played Laurens Tuesday night and will be at Travelers Rest next Tuesday for a 5 p.m. scrimmage, its final of the summer.

“Dorian (Lindsay, sophomore quarterback) has had a good summer,” Young said. “We’re moving Quez more than last year in our passing game and Tay Woods has played more offense. Emmanuel (Kelly) has also had a good summer at wide receiver.”

Young has been working with the linemen in the weight room this summer. “They are doing great and have worked hard,” Young said.

Greer begins fall practice Friday, Aug. 2. Camp Swarm is Aug. 7-9 with the Yellow Jackets hosting Gaffney in a 6 p.m. scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 9.

Greer plays its opening game at Seneca on Aug. 30 and its first home game Sept. 6 versus Riverside.
