It was a team effort at the fundraiser at Zaxby's.
Football players and cheerleaders were at Zaxby’s on Wade Hampton Blvd. Tuesday selling tickets, $1 each, to win a jersey and a football. The winners will be announced at the Greer spring game.
Chad Hannon, public address announcer, and Joe Poole attended the fundraiser with Young.
Spring practice begins Monday, May 19 and the spring game will be held Friday, May 30 at 6 p.m. at Dooley Field, said Young.
“It’s a little later this year and that allows us to get the track people back since their season is over,” Young said.
The first three days of practice are light and rising 9th graders are allowed only during non-contact. “After the first three days they can’t be on the field,” Young said.
Young said this year’s team will be a little bigger with four of the five offensive line starters back. The defensive line is almost intact. Both backfields have had some losses but Young said there’s enough talent to fill in.
“We want to see the players compete during spring and we want to have a little fun,” Young said.
Mario Cusano and Brice Green will get most of the quarterback snaps with Dorian Lindsey getting some looks in designed packages, Young said.
There have been several coaches changes heading into spring. Justin Funderburk, former D team coach, will work with the running backs. Jay Abercrombie has left Greer to take a position at Walhalla High School.
Thomas Wilkes who coached basketball at Greer Middle School will become the D team head coach.
Bob Massullo, who left coaching for the 2013 season, returns to the Yellow Jackets as defensive ends coach. Rashaad Jackson will coach the defensive line.
“We’re glad to have coach Massullo back,” Young said.
