Greer marched into the third round of the Class AAAA football playoffs Friday night by knocking off South Aiken, 42-21, at Dooley Field.
Greer will play Greenville, a 42-27 winner over York, next Friday in the semifinal game of the Upper State bracket. The game will be played at Dooley Field and a packed stadium is all but guaranteed when the two rivals play. Greer beat Greenville, 27-19, in the regular season. Greer has a 10-game winning streak and is 11-1 overall.
Trey Houston threw three first-half touchdown passes – two to Quay White and one to Dre Williams.
White returned a kickoff 72 yards to help Greer to a 28-7 halftime lead. He added a 50-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter.
Matthew Huff scored Greer’s final touchdown on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Houston completed half of his six completions for touchdowns. Houston’s passing yardage was an uncharacteristic 108 yards.
Williams ran for 122 of Greer’s 265 rushing yards.
The Yellow Jackets defense was stretched by South Aiken. The Thoroughbreds had possession for 25 more plays – 78-53 – than Greer and had the ball for five minutes more.
Greer’s quick-strike offense shattered South Aiken’s defense, which allowed opponents less than 13 points on average per game.
