The soccer playoff was the final game of the season for Greer team sports and its final appearance in Region III. Greer will play in the Region II next year, which fields almost exclusively Greenville County schools teams. The only competitive sport ongoing at Greer is for individual track and field titles this weekend in Columbia.
Walhalla scored a goal at 5:18 of the first half and added its second at 32:04 of the second half and its third goal at 28:53.
Greer had limited success on goal. “We couldn’t get the ball to anybody,” Greer coach Jorge Santos said. “Walhalla kept the ball away from us and played a good defense that I’ve not seen much.
“Walhalla outplayed us and passed the ball well. No good can come from a team that keeps possession as long as they did,” Santos said.
The season turned out better than Santos imagined. "The season has been great," Santos said. "I didn't have any expectations we would have been this successful."
Santos tried to consol the players after the game. He congratulated them on a historic season and for helping to build Greer High School’s soccer program. The school did not field a jayvee team.
Irwin Cardoza, a junior, was signaled out by Santos in the team meeting for his play as a backer on offense. He was playing for the injured Islam Istanboli who was sidelined because of a concussion. “I played that possession some last year and had a lot more experience than any other player.”
Cardoza, with his shirt covering his face, was distressed after the loss. “My heart is broken a little bit,” Cardoza said. “I went after it at 110 percent. I love winning but it’s hard to lose.”
