The Conservatory, set to begin Sept. 11, is named in honor of former music leader of The Salvation Army’s Greenville Youth Band.
The program provides local youth opportunities in chorus, guitar, music theory, drama, percussion, piano and brass instruments.
Major Kent Davis, area commander for The Salvation Army of Greenville, Pickens and Oconee counties said: “We are excited to reach out to children in our community. There is overwhelming research that clearly shows the positive impact of the arts on cognitive capacities, academic performance, social development and creative capacities for the lifelong success of our youth. Statistics show that children involved in the arts perform better in school, are less likely to be involved in risky behaviors and build critical self-discipline, communication, and job skills.”
The Conservatory will be held at the Kroc Center located in Downtown Greenville. The program will be conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. over 36 weeks. The cost of $35 per week covers instruction and materials fees, as well as provide an instrument for the child. Partial need-based scholarships are available.
