Limestone celebrates its 2017 NCAA National Championship Division II national lacrosse championship – its third in four years.
It is Limestone’s third championship in four years and avenged an earlier defeat to Merrimack. Limestone has won five national championships.
Limestone finished 21-1 and Merrimack 15-4.
Facing a 6-4 deficit early in the second half, Limestone surged ahead with a 5-0 spurt, including three goals within a 17-second span.
• Limestone is the third South Carolina school to win a national championship this year, joining Clemson (football) and University of South Carolina (women’s basketball)
Standout Limestone performances:
• Junior Ryan Maciejewski (Penn Yan, N.Y.) led the offense with three goals and an assist
• Senior Kevin Reisman (West Babylon, N.Y.) went 17-of-24 at the center “X” and added 14 groundballs and an assist to pick up tournament Most Outstanding Player honors
• Senior Chris Clancy (Peterborough, Ontario) posted a goal and an assist
• Junior Charlie Sheehan (St. Catharines, Ontario) added a goal and an assist
• Nine different Saints registered at least one goal, including seniors Colton Watkinson (Burlington, Ontario) and Dale Cornetta (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and redshirt-junior Brendan P. Smith (West Islip, N.Y.)
• Junior keeper Cole Aikens (Novato, Calif.) was tremendous in between the pipes, especially in the second half – he finished with 13 saves overall, eight of which came over the final 30 minutes
