The Book Club at Greer High School meets the first Friday of each month during all three lunches in the media conference room. Students bring their lunches to eat during the meeting. Lemonade and desserts are provided as a treat.
At the first meeting, Feb. 1, each lunch group nominated books and then voted on one to read. "First lunch" book club chose Divergent, a dystopian novel, by Veronica Roth.
"Second lunch" book club chose The Book Thief, a historical fiction novel set in Germany during World War II narrated by death, written by Markus Zusak.
"Third lunch" book club chose Unwind, a sci-fi thriller, written by Neal Shusterman.
At the second meeting on March 1, as students arrived, they watched a video clip of each author talking about their book and the reasons for writing it. Students and teachers discussed different themes within the books. Also, students answered questions about the book with a partner and shared that information with the group.
LeAnnKiser facilitated the discussion along with Gala Mickle at first lunch, William Cherney at second lunch and Emily Holtzclaw at third lunch.
The next book club meeting is scheduled for March 28.
The books are being rotated through the lunches.
